As we move into the stage of transitioning from quarantine to being out in public again, there may be a transitional stage. We have been living in the confinements of our homes, eating home cooked meals everyday socializing with only family members. This probably doesn’t sound so bad but when you have to go into public wearing a bra or pants, that may be a little bit of a challenge.
Over the past few days, we may have developed bad sleeping and eating habits. I know that I have developed bad eating, sleeping and exercise habits. The good news is that with consistent behavior, we can change or revert.
The power of being consistent is key. That applies to every aspect of out lives whether it pertains to exercise or working toward a goal. The only way to get better is to repeat and rehearse what you want to excel in. Being consistent builds the muscle that we need to sustain the results.
To form a new habit, we must:
- Do it everyday
- Be consistent
- Envision our outcome
- Have hope
- Have the desire to change
- Be persistent
- Be positive
- Be patient
- Believe
One of the ways that we learn is through repetition. We need to continuously repeat the motion or think the thoughts before the change occurs. This is why athletes spend numerous hours shooting a ball to perfect their aim. Their mind and body must be synchronized. Your brain needs continuous repetition before learning a new habit. Your body needs continuous motion to learn the desired skill.
Repetition also applies to bad habits. If you continuously ignore the gym or eat too many high caloric meals, you develop unhealthy habits. Unhealthy habits are learned just as healthy habits are learned.
We are a product to our environment. By living in an environment that inhibits growth, we reinforce unhealthy habits. Bad habits can range from:
- Procrastination
- Ignoring your health
- Skipping the gym
- Impulse buying
- Not taking care of yourself
- The list goes on…
If considering your diet, you may have developed a habit of buying unhealthy food versus healthy food. If we buy unhealthy food or even healthy food that we fail to prepare, we set ourselves up for failure.
Let’s develop good habits by continuously enforcing good ones. We need to feed our bodies good food, exercise and feed our minds with positive reinforcement.
