In the past few days, I’ve experienced varying stress levels triggered by world eventss. I’ve worried about not having enough toilet paper, meat and basic necessities. I’ve had to wake up early prepared to stand in line for hours to get toilet paper and paper towels. I know that this sounds minute compared to other people’s issues but it has been the issue for many.
In these challenging times, we may be experiencing a little more stress than necessary. Although we are at home, we are handling the stress of working from home and home schooling. We may feel stressed but that’s only because we feel that we have no control in this situation. We are uncertain of the situation and how long it is going to last. We have grown comfortable to knowing details and time lines. I feel stressed because I don’t have access to basic supplies like toilet paper and also from the possibility of getting sick from trying to get to buy it.
Aside from everything that is happening, the only thing that we have control of is ourselves and how we react. We are in control or ourselves and our emotions and we can control how we react. Over the years, after reading many books, I’ve learned not to react to situations. It is better to remain calm and not add fuel to to fire. I know that this seems like basic information but sometimes we need to be reminded. I have learned to do this by:
- Meditate – start or end your day with meditation
- Get enough sleep – get 8 hours of sleep, if possible
- Stick to a routine – progress is in our routines
- Start a hobby – learn something new
- Eating well – eat your vitamins
- Exercise – exercise the stress away
- Talk with friends – laughter is the best medicine
- Spend time outdoors – nature helps us to refocus
- Listen to music – spend time singing out of tune and dancing to your favorite songs
I’m not immune to emotional triggers but I can better able handle situations that can arise. Stay safe out there.
